Bampton is a town rich in history. The Romans had a fort nearby and Bampton is mentioned in Domesday Book and a castle mound still remains . Burnt to the ground by Royalists during the Civil War it grew rich by the wool trade where sheep were sold at the famous Bampton Fair. Quarried for it's stone since ancient times, the railway shipped out the stone around the country. The Station was closed in 1963, but the platform is still there buried under the Station Road carpark. For more on Bampton's history click below.
